MARCH OF DIMES - Walk for Babies
On Saturday, April 19, our Club provided lunch to the walkers in the 2008 March of Dimes "Walk for Babies" at Isothermal Community College. The March of Dimes mission is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth, and infant mortality. They carry out this mission through research, community services, education and advocacy to save babies' lives. March of Dimes researchers, volunteers, educators, outreach workers and advocates work together to give all babies a fighting chance against the threats to their health: prematurity, birth defects, low birthweight. At the Rutherford County "March for Babies", there were 250 people in attendance and over $70,000 was raised.

2008 ANNUAL PANCAKE BREAKFAST
On Saturday, March 29, we held our annual Pancake Breakfast at Forest City-Dunbar Elementary School. We fed 375 people who enjoyed pancakes, biscuits & gravy, sausage, eggs, and coffee/ juice. With the generous sponsorship from businesses and individuals in Rutherford County, this event raised over $5000. This money will be used to support projects like bicycle helmet distribution, the dictionary project, Terrific Kids, car seat checks, college scholarships, and the DSS Foster Children's Fund (just to name a few).

2008 BICYCLE HELMET DISTRIBUTION
On a yearly basis, the partnership with SafeKids of Rutherford County allows the Forest City Kiwanis Club to purchase a bicycle helmet for every 3rd grade student in Rutherford County. In the spring of 2003, Kiwanis contributed of over $2,700 to buy 864 helmets that were fitted to each student. In 2004, over 1,100 helmets were distributed and fitted to third graders. Each year, the Kiwanis contribution has grown and 2008 promises to be the best yet. We began the fittings and distribution to students on February 4th and will complete our project by the end of February. Each 3rd grade student sees a video about helmet safety and the dangers of head injury, signs a contract promising to wear their helmet appropriately, and has a helmet fitted specifically to his/her head. Volunteers from SafeKids, Kiwanis, Pilot Club, and other caring individuals donate their time to visit each school and make this a fun experience.

NEW 2007 DICTIONARY PROJECT
In the fall of 2007, our club began a new service project to distribute a brand new dictionary to every 3rd grade student in Rutherford County. Over 800 dictionaries were delivered by Kiwanis members. The students were very grateful and excited to have a dictionary of their own. The pictures posted below were from Ellenboro Elementary.
